Darlington home raises money and awareness for national dementia campaign

A Darlington care home is inviting visitors to make time for a cuppa to support a national dementia awareness campaign.

Residents at Care UK’s Ventress Hall will be busy baking away for a special coffee morning at their home in Trinity Road to raise money for the charity Dementia UK on Wednesday 6th March.

The charity’s ‘Time for a Cuppa’ campaign hopes to raise awareness of the condition and its effects, as well as raising money for its work with people in the community.

Home Manager Judy Wray said: “Our residents and team are very keen to support the campaign and so, the day before the event, they will be taking over our kitchens to bake for the coffee morning.

“We have some very talented cooks among our team and residents, so I can guarantee anyone coming along will certainly have the pick of some very tasty treats. We are also being supported by our relatives and friends in the community, who have also pledged to bake for the event.”

As well as coffee and cake, there will be leaflets available from Dementia UK and other dementia organisations giving information and advice on the condition.

Judy said: “We are not a dementia specialist home, but we all wanted to support such a worthwhile cause. Our residents love having visitors, especially young ones, so I’d encourage everyone to drop in, say hello and have a cuppa for the campaign.”

The event runs from 10.30am until noon and everyone is welcome.

To mark Time for a Cuppa week, Care UK, a leading provider of health and social care services throughout the country, commissioned an independent survey into the nation’s tea-drinking habits.

The survey found that people around the UK place great value on the benefits of meeting friends and family for a cuppa and to share news – a view shared by 75% of people in the North East.

People in the region also named Sean Connery and Sir Winston Churchill as two famous names they would most like to share a cuppa with.

Sharing family news over a cuppa was also top choice for adults around the UK, with nearly 75% saying it was their favourite way to share family news and events and 51% of over 55s opting for their children as the favourite people to make time for a cuppa and a chat with.
