Cuppas and coppers at South Shields care home

There will be time for a cuppa with a copper at Care UK’s Cheviot Court next week, when local police offers join residents in opening up the home and passing round the cake to support a national dementia campaign.

Local police officers will be joining residents at the home, in Horsley Hill Square, South Shields on Tuesday to take part in a coffee morning to raise funds for Dementia UKs Time for a Cuppa week.

Time for a Cuppa is a national campaign designed to raise awareness of dementia and its effects and residents at the home decided they wanted to raise awareness and funds for Dementia UK by holding a coffee morning.

Home Manager Louise Damms said: “The home plays an active role in the life of the community; residents helped us to create flyers and they have been out and about publicising the event and encouraging people to come along.

“As well as great cakes and biscuits made by our talented kitchen team, there will be information available on dementia as well as team members who will be happy to talk about aspects of the condition.

The home holds monthly coffee mornings that are attended by local police officers and residents were delighted when they said they would come along and support our fund-raising efforts too.

Louise added: “The police have always been good friends to us. They tell the residents all about what’s going on in the community and they enjoy hearing the residents’ stories.

“I think it is a very positive relationship, as the officers who visit are now very experienced at talking to older people and if they encounter someone with dementia in the course of their work, they know how to be supportive.”

The coffee morning runs from 10am-noon and visitors are welcome to come along and have a chat with the residents and the team over a cuppa and a cake.
