Our delight as the Queen says thank you for our cards

Everyone at Addington Heights was thrilled when the postman unexpectedly delivered a message from the Queen thanking us for our cards and good wishes during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

During the summer, residents spent time creating beautiful cards and artwork that they sent to the Queen. The cards not only contained their best wishes but also memories of her reign.

Manager Jacqueline Johnson said: “We spent a lot of time reminiscing about the Queen, her trips abroad, her children and about the key moments in her reign. We also made lots of decorations, including a gem-covered replica of the state crown, and our home was a riot of colour during the celebrations.

“Everyone put in so much effort I thought it would be nice to write to the Queen and tell her all about the work of the team and the residents.”

In November, we received a letter from Buckingham Palace, written by one of the Queen’s Ladies-in-Waiting. She said the Queen had asked her to thank us for all our good wishes and support and she was sorry that it had taken so long to respond but, understandably, they had received many letters and cards.

Jacqueline said: “Everyone was delighted with the letter. We have photocopied it so that everyone has had a chance to read it and we are framing the original so that all our visitors and future residents will be able to read about our efforts and the Queen’s kindness.”
