1964 Time capsule uncovered on building site in Hailsham

Children at White House Primary School have been time detectives thanks to a dig at the site of Care UK’s latest care home in Hailsham.

During the dig at the site previously occupied by manufacturer Apaseal, a time capsule from 1964 was uncovered. The honour of opening it was given to three of the children, Dale Jenner, Stephanie Hill and Rosie Rimmer, from the White House Primary School who had been finalists in a competition to name the new care home that is due to open in May 2013.

The time capsule included a copy of the Financial Times dated 10^th September 1964 which carried the headline “British Satellite Launch on the Way”. Also inside were copies of the Sussex Express and County Herald, which carried news of a barbecue event, with seven bonfires, at Pevensey Beach that raised £75 for the organ restoration fund, a trip for older people to Littlehampton provided by the Cross in Hand Choral Society and lots of local weddings from the weekend before.

Head Teacher Heather Baldwin said: “We were very pleased and excited to be invited to link with Care UK. The children were fascinated with the time capsule and very interested to see the items that had been preserved in it. It has given them some ideas as to what they would like children of the future to know about them.”

Sara Goodwin, Care UK’s Project Manager for the new Hailsham home, said: “We were delighted to offer the children the chance to be time detectives and now all the children in the school are deciding what should be put in a new capsule that will be buried in the grounds of our new home.”

The home, which will feature 90 en-suite rooms, will provide residential and nursing care as well as Care UK’s unique, award-winning, specialist dementia care.
