Cheviot Court highlights the importance of dementia care with a week of activities

Residents at Cheviot Court are marking national Dementia Awareness Week (20-26th May) with fun activities to show that there is life after a diagnosis of dementia.

Our Manager Louise Damms said: “For many people, the idea of dementia holds many fears and a diagnosis feels like the end of the world. Our residents and my team are determined to show that isn’t the case. With good care and worthwhile activities, life goes on.”

Residents have chosen to celebrate the week by taking part in their favourite activities, which include a festival of black and white films (that will, naturally, include lots of popcorn), a cheese and wine tasting event, a pamper day and a day of baking.

Louise laughed: “We have some talented bakers – too talented, as their cakes and bread are just too tempting!

“The team works hard to ensure that all our residents can keep up their talents and interests. By keeping active, residents maintain their life skills and are able to keep independent. Just because you move into a home doesn’t mean you have to give up your friends, interests and ambitions.”

Cheviot Court, which holds an award for its outstanding hygiene, is a purpose-built home situated in Horsley Hill Square, South Shields, close to local amenities and the coast, providing residential, dementia, respite and palliative care in a safe and friendly environment.
