Heather View – what’s in a name?

Children at Sir Henry Fermor Church of England Primary School, Crowborough, took part in a Care UK competition to choose the name of the latest nursing home to be opened by Care UK.

The competition to name the 74-bed home was open to the school’s 411 pupils and was won by Year 5 pupil Abbie Goldsmith.  The home’s name will now be Heather View.

Abbie, who won a Nintendo DSi for her winning entry, said: “I came up with the name ‘Heather View’ because years ago, the fields around Crowborough used to be covered in heather.”

It’s true, around 200 years ago, Crowborough was known as ‘Scotland in Sussex’ thanks to its proximity to the heather and pines of Ashdown Forest. These days, of course, residents at the 74-bed home will no longer be able to see fields of heather when they look out, but thanks to floor to ceiling windows throughout the purpose-designed building, they will be able to enjoy equally spectacular views of Crowborough and the South Downs.
