Station House has beaten off stiff competition from care homes across England and Scotland to win Care UK’s best themed events award.
The events the home offered were hugely popular with residents, their relatives and staff and included an old-fashioned sports day, a mother’s day pamper session and St Patrick’s Day race night.
Entries to the competition were judged on the originality of theme, involvement of the residents, evidence of relative or community involvement and the creativity and originality of material.
Home Manager Carole Wardle said: ”Last week we had a party in the park, this week we had people bringing in dolls from the 1920s onwards and we bought old fashioned sweets for the residents to eat as they looked at the dolls and reminisced.”
Other events have included race nights, pamper session and dog grooming. Carole said: “Jane our unit manager bought in her miniature schnauzer and the residents helped to wash, dry and groom it. They had so much fun and they laughed as Sox, the home’s dog, came up to see just what was going on.”
“I’m lucky to have such wonderful staff. They don’t see their work as a job but as a vocation and they volunteer to bring their talents, hobbies and spare time into these events. As word has spread about the events we are getting a lot more participation from the local community too, which is excellent. It brings a whole new range of exciting opportunities and entertainment to the residents.”
The Care UK best themed events award was open to all of the company’s 59 homes. Judging was carried out by a team of senior managers from Care UK. Station House was presented with a special certificate and a cash bonus to spend on the home.
