Carla Kell

Home Manager

Carla Kell

I’m excited by the challenge of working at a newly commissioned care home.

A good Home Manager needs to be calm, patient, proactive, and empathetic. I understand through extensive experience that the small details make a huge difference. I’m always happy to talk through any questions or concerns residents or their families have.

I value being a trusted face within the home and the wider community. I like to get to know everyone I meet, whether it’s residents, families, colleagues, health professionals or entertainers. I enjoy these informal moments and these conversations are what hold a home together.

I ensure the home offers a safe, stimulating, and fun place to spend time in. It’s a place where CQC standards are maintained or exceeded at all times. My priority is to create an open, positive, and inclusive atmosphere. A home that advocates dignity, independence, choice, and self-fulfilment for all residents.

I strive to ensure my team always provides the professional and empathetic care everyone deserves. Under my leadership with a previous team, we won the ‘The Team of the Year’ and ‘West Berkshire Business of the Year’ awards.

I’m married with two grown up children and I’m a keen runner. I love walking our dog or enjoy chilling out with a coffee after some retail therapy.

Deputy Manager

As deputy manager, it’s important to be passionate, determined and kind. I feel really excited to be part of a new team at Charlton Lodge. Being able to make a positive difference in residents lives and give back to the community makes me incredibly proud.

I chose to join Care UK because its values align closely with my own beliefs. I was also keen to be part of an organisation that supports progression and career aspirations. I have a bachelor’s in nursing and a CNO Fellowship which is focused on clinical accreditation.

Previously, I was a disability analyst, which was a research-based role so being promoted to a managerial position has been a highlight for me. Leadership training has also helped support this transition.

I enjoy spending my free time with family and friends. I also love reading and nature walks.

Mark Young
Customer Relations Manager

I've worked at Care UK as a Customer Relations Manager for three years at Millers Grange in Witney and absolutely loved the role, so I was thrilled when I learnt Care UK were expanding into Wantage. I actually live in one of the local villages and I'm very passionate about the area.

This role is about listening to families and creating a tailor made solution for them at what can be a very difficult time for them. It’s important to have a friendly and compassionate personality, and adapt to the situation as everyone you meet has a different story. I enjoy supporting families through the journey of finding the right care home for their loved one.

I like to arrive early each day, just as residents are waking up. I take a walk around and say good morning to everyone and help to open the home up, ready for the day ahead. When you visit you might meet Ted, my rescue dog, who sometimes comes along to the home for the day. He always brings a smile to residents’ faces!

Head Chef

I love to cook and it’s what I do best. I have worked at all levels and in every part of the catering industry, including some of the best restaurants in London, at Oxford colleges, pubs and even a school. I wanted to be part of Care UK because it is an organisation that really invests in quality catering and its teams.

To be a head chef, you need to feel joy from providing the very best food you can. You also need to work well in a team and thrive as a team player.

Positive feedback from both residents and colleagues makes me proud to do what I do. It is so rewarding to see residents smile after a good meal. Good food is part of a fulfilling life, and it is important that we can support that.

When I’m not cooking at Charlton Lodge, I like to travel to food festivals and collect recipes. I also enjoy football and DIY.

Night Team Leader

I wanted to join Care UK because I liked the values of caring, passionate, teamwork.

In my role, it’s especially true and you need to be a team player, as well as be hardworking. I think empathy is also essential. It is about understanding and being able to adapt care to suit individuals.

I love being able to engage with residents. Helping them to feel at home and supporting them to be independent. It always makes me proud when we see our efforts really making a positive difference.

Before becoming the night team leader, I was a night care assistant. Previously, I’ve worked in hospitals and in domiciliary care.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my mum and dad. I am also an enthusiastic cook and football fan.

Team Leader

I think Care UK’s values of caring, passionate, teamwork really sum up what my role is all about. You also need to be reliable, as well as hardworking.

It’s really important to me that we can provide a consistently high standard of care. It is a joy to see residents smile and take part in the various activities we organise. It shows the positivity we can all bring to someone’s day.

I’ve worked in different types of care environments and being able to adapt to each situation is rewarding. Completing various clinical courses has also helped me to develop my skills and knowledge.

I spend my free time with family and walking our dog.
