With the Olympics fast approaching, three local care homes are limbering up for their very own sporting tournaments.
Care UK’s Davers Court, on Shakers Lane, Glastonbury Court, on Glastonbury Road, and Mildenhall Lodge, on St John’s Close, will be bringing Paris to Bury St Edmunds as they open their doors for local people to enjoy their own version of the Games.
The event comes as the homes join The Big Care UK Sports Day, which sees over 130 Care UK homes across the UK host sports days for the local community and showcase what life in a care home is really like.
Guests can soak up the sporting atmosphere and, for those daring to compete, have the chance to win their own gold medals with an afternoon of fun and games, including egg-and-spoon races, tug of war and knockout tennis tournaments.
Visitors at Davers Court, whose event takes place on Tuesday 23rd July from 12:30pm, can also enjoy a traditional summer barbecue cooked by the home’s talented head chef.
On Thursday 25th July from 11am, visitors to Glastonbury Court event can enjoy light refreshments and entertainment from live performers Barry and Pete in the morning and Paul Pleasants in the afternoon.
Also on Thursday 25th from 2pm, Mildenhall Lodge visitors can enjoy light refreshments and live music performed by Pam Daish.
Sophie Evans, Home Manager at Davers Court, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the local community to join our sporting celebrations.
“We are part of a strong community here in Bury St Edmunds, and days like this are a fantastic way of bringing us all together for a little healthy competition and to celebrate this year’s summer of sport, all while showcasing exactly what life is like in our Care UK care homes.”
Ana Mihai, Home Manager at Glastonbury Court, added: “Keeping fit is important for all ages, but exercise has many additional benefits for older people, from reducing the risk of falls to increasing wellbeing and confidence. We know just how important physical activity is, so we always encourage residents to stay active – and hosting a sports day is the perfect way to do just that.
“We have some very competitive and skilled residents who have been warming up in preparation for some community competition. We can’t wait until kick-off!”
Hannah Nurse, Home Manager at Mildenhall Lodge, said: “The Olympics has brought about a fantastic opportunity to rediscover residents’ own sporting history and passion – and we’re keen to share this sporting fever with the local community.
“We can’t wait to welcome the community into our homes to join in the fun and games this summer.”
Mildenhall Lodge, Glastonbury Court and Davers Court are modern care homes providing full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care, with Davers Court having also recently opened its new day centre. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the homes have their very own cinema and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
