Bon appetite! Edgbaston care home applauded for its dining experience

A care home in Edgbaston is celebrating after being named the home with the ‘best dining experience’ out of 150 care homes across the country.

Care UK’s Metchley Manor, on Church Road, was crowned the winner of the ‘Best Dining Experience’ category in the Care UK Stars of 2022 awards, for its commitment to offering a tailored and luxurious dining experience for the residents at the home.

The Care UK Stars of 2022 awards recognise and celebrate the fantastic work of Care UK’s team members who excel in their roles and responsibilities across the UK.

Team members at Metchley Manor have been praised for ensuring that residents dine with dignity, have plenty of choice, and are served great food that looks, tastes and is of the same standard as fine dining.

As part of its dining experience, the home regularly hosts themed meals and events which are chosen by the residents. This included a street party for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee where residents enjoyed a traditional British afternoon tea. The home also regularly partners with Age UK, where team members and residents often work together to organise luxury packed lunch boxes for older neighbours in the community.

The home also grows its own produce, where herbs and vegetables are tended to by residents and the team in the sensory garden which is part of the home’s reminiscence suite for residents living with dementia. The produce is used in the kitchen both as main ingredients and, in the case of micro herbs, for decoration.

Commenting on the home’s dining experience, 96-year-old resident, Shirley, said: “I would like to congratulate the kitchen team on this award win. Their fish cakes and crème brûlée are my personal favourites and are always excellent – as is the service!”

Scott Tame, Head Chef at Metchley Manor, said: “Whether we’re creating appetising dishes, or baking cakes for residents to enjoy with a cup of tea, we strive to make a positive impact on residents’ health and wellbeing through nutrition and hydration.

“I’m over the moon that the Metchley Manor team has won this award against some fantastic catering competition across the Care UK family.”

Kim-Marie Newton, General Manager at Metchley Manor, added: “We’re delighted to be named the home that offers the best dining experience. Our team members work incredibly hard to ensure that mealtimes are enjoyable, and that there is always a variety of tasty and nutritious meals on offer each day.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Scott, and the whole catering team at Metchley Manor. I’m so proud of what we achieve every day, and it’s fantastic that everyone’s hard work has been recognised.”

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Metchley Manor, which remains open to potential residents, incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been configured into a series of neighbourhoods to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
