Frome care home resident learns Japanese

Highlighted home news

A resident at a care home in Frome was delighted when she was offered the chance to learn the Japanese language.

The team at Care UK’s Rossetti House, on Welshmill Lane, was approached by Tony McNicol, from WeDoJapan, a Japanese translation agency, to see if any of the residents would be interested in learning Japanese. Rita Bishop jumped at the chance and said: “It is something everyone can do; it doesn’t matter how old you are.”

Rita’s lessons covered many topics such as greetings, animals, food and the weather. Tony shared stories about when he used to live in Tokyo including how different Japanese culture is to British culture.

Commenting on the lessons Rita said: “I loved learning about the culture and the language.

“Given the chance, I would love to do it again, but I may need to give my brain a rest first.”

Philip Vale, General Manager at Rossetti House, said: “It was great to see Rita so engaged in her Japanese lessons and having so much fun.

“Here at Rossetti House, we understand the importance learning can have in preventing memory loss as well as help those living with memory loss. It can also help residents have a sense of purpose and boost their confidence.

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Tony for giving Rita the opportunity to take Japanese lessons and immerse herself into another culture. We hope to have more lessons in the future!

Designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence, Rossetti House incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities. The building has been designed to help facilitate the creation of close-knit communities and encourage social interaction among the residents.
