A 104-year-old Harrow care home resident has revealed the secret to living a long and happy life.
Hilda Canioni, who lives at Care UK’s Buchanan Court on Sudbury Hill, celebrated her 104th birthday with her family, residents, and team members.
Hilda was born on 21st April 1920 and grew up in Paddington, London, where she later began a successful career as a secretary. Passionate about language and always inspired by French culture, Hilda attended French lessons where she met her future husband, Joe. As Joe was originally from France, the two spent many summers holidaying across the country where Hilda enjoyed embracing French culture and cuisine.
Reflecting on her many happy years, Hilda revealed the secret to living a long life: “A drop of sherry and new adventures. Never give up on new interests and experiences!”
To help make Hilda’s birthday one to remember, the team threw her a special party complete with a delicious birthday cake specially made by the home’s talented Head Chef – which everyone enjoyed with “a drop of sherry”.
Commenting on her big day, Hilda said: “I had a wonderful day – it was fantastic having all my friends and relatives here for my party and to help me celebrate!”
Esther Adams, Home Manager at Buchanan Court, said: “Here at Buchanan Court, we love to throw a party for special milestones – and Hilda’s birthday certainly called for a celebration!
“It was wonderful to see Hilda surrounded by all her loved ones to mark such an incredible milestone. The team worked tirelessly to make sure her day was one to remember, and we would like to thank everyone who came along to raise a glass of sherry to Hilda!”
Buchanan Court provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own bar and hair salon, and there is plenty of space both in and outdoors for relaxation and recreation.
