Dancing shoes at the ready – Bracknell care home hosts its own carnival

Residents at a Bracknell care home marched to the beat of their own steel drum for a special celebration.

Care UK’s Bickerton House, on Warfield Road, hosted its very own version of Notting Hill Carnival, complete with handcrafted masks, music and dancing.

Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s largest carnival, is an annual celebration of Caribbean culture held in London in late August. In 2021, with the event cancelled for the second year in a row due to coronavirus restrictions, team members at Bickerton House got their creative heads together and decided to get busy bringing a taste of the carnival to the home.

In true Notting Hill Carnival style, residents wore brightly coloured masks – which they created themselves - in preparation for the event and tapped their feet to Caribbean inspired music, who helped everyone get into the party spirit.

One resident, Laury, said “I enjoyed the atmosphere during our celebrations. It made me very happy to see everyone enjoying themselves."

Erika Smith, Home Manager at Bickerton House said: “It’s a shame to see Notting Hill Carnival being cancelled for the second year in a row, but this inspired us to host our own celebration and bring the carnival to Bracknell. Our carnival-themed event was a great success, and we loved hosting our very own bar, The Heron.

“Here at Bickerton House, we’re always looking for fun and exciting ways to get residents up and active, and themed events like the Notting Hill Carnival are a great way of doing just that. On top of inspiring everyone to find out more about different cultures, it’s also a fantastic opportunity to get our dancing shoes on and showcase our best moves.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to the team, who worked tirelessly to organise a fantastic celebration.”
