The foundation stone has been laid at the site of our new state-of-the-art Portsmouth care home, at a civic ceremony where local dignitaries met the Care UK team.
Harry Sotnick House, in Cranleigh Avenue, which is due to open in February 2011, will be a 92-bed home for older people with dementia and nursing needs, with a physiotherapy room, hairdressers, garden room and shop as well as a multi-faith chapel and library.
Care UK has a reputation for excellence in residential care with 94 per cent of its homes receiving Good or Excellent star ratings from the Care Quality Commission – the inspectorate responsible for monitoring residential and nursing homes.
Care UK project director, Jason Cotta, said; “We are delighted to be opening this new state-of-the-art care home in Portsmouth, working in partnership with the city council. As one of the UK's highest rated providers of residential care for the elderly, we look forward to bringing our expertise to caring for the new residents of this home and continuing to honour the memory of a much loved Portsmouth man - Harry Sotnick.”
The home will be named after the former Portsmouth lord mayor, whose son, Alderman Richard Sotnick (himself a former mayor and former leader of Portsmouth City Council), laid the stone. In a moving speech he paid tribute to his father, who died in 1970.
He said: "My father was an amazing man with many great qualities and I am delighted the home will be Harry Sotnick House. I wish those who reside there, residents and staff, a satisfying life, and that they live in happiness and contentment."
Leo Madden, council cabinet member for health and social care, said: “There are lots of great things being done for older people in this city. This wonderful development shows that Portsmouth City Council is committed to meeting the future care needs of its residents."
