Building work has begun on a new 92-bed care home being built for Portsmouth City Council by Care UK, the leading independent provider of health and social care.
The new two-storey Harry Sotnick House is being built at Cranleigh Avenue, Portsmouth, replacing the former home on the site. The project involves design, construction and the provision of care and facilities management services. When complete it will be a care home for older people with dementia with nursing care facilities.
Care UK and Portsmouth City Council agreed the plan in August of this year. Building work will take about 15 months with the home scheduled to open in February 2011. It will have both public and private beds.
All bedrooms will be en-suite, with telephone and broadband points available. Some ground floor rooms will have access to secure courtyards.
On the ground floor there will be an internet cafe, physiotherapy facilities and a gym, hairdressing and a garden room. The first floor will contain a multi-faith chapel and a library/quiet room.
Jen Adams, Project Manager for Care UK, said:”This will be a wonderful new facility for the people of Portsmouth. We place great emphasis on ensuring that those that we care for enjoy life to the full. Our activity based care philosophy, which focuses on what people can do rather than on what they can’t, has seen many of our residents across the country continue to lead fulfilling lives.”
Portsmouth City Council Cabinet member for Health and Social Care, Councillor Leo Madden said: "I am delighted that work is underway on Harry Sotnick House. When completed, Harry Sotnick House will be a 92-bed specialised nursing home providing care to some of the most vulnerable older people in Portsmouth."
