An exclusive blend of teas for residents on modified diets

Care UK nutrition experts have worked with a premium specialist tea company to create a first for the sector: a tea that is designed to taste better as it is thickened for those on modified diets. 

 

‘Next Level Tea’ has been exclusively developed in a joint venture with the boutique, family-run company Tea From The Manor. It offers four delightful flavours, Green Tea and Mint, Red Berry, English Breakfast, and Earl Grey. The fruit and herbal options are decaffeinated, catering to diverse tastes while supporting hydration and health. These teas meet IDDSI framework levels 1-4, providing more beverage choices for residents with dysphagia who eat a modified diet. 

Crafted over five months, the blends were perfected by Care UK’s Andrew Mussett and Tea From The Manor’s James Green. Their focus was on maintaining vibrant flavours, strong aromas, and quick brewing times, ensuring a comforting, hot drink for every resident.

From our research, we know most residents switch to coffee when they enter care homes. We think this is due to personal preference – care homes may not carry a resident’s favourite brand of tea, for example. It was important to us that the teas maintained their strong aroma to help promote the flavour. Usually, once the thickener is added, this is lost, but we’re pleased that this is not the case here. They are the perfect palate cleanser for residents and the teas leave them feeling refreshed.

Our partnership with Tea From The Manor

James Green, founder of Tea From The Manor, started his journey with the British Army at just 16 years old. While posted in Hong Kong, he served alongside the Gurkhas, who introduced him to the true essence of quality tea, igniting a lifelong passion.

After retiring from the army, James decided to turn this passion into a business. In 2011, he teamed up with his daughter Charlotte to establish Tea From The Manor. Over a decade later, the company proudly supplies exceptional teas to many of the country’s finest hotels, restaurants, cafes, and care homes.

A highlight of James’ work is designing bespoke tea blends for clients. Working with Care UK provided a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact. Tasked with adding thickening powder to his teas, James carefully balanced flavors to create the perfect combinations. He understands the importance of taste memory and its significance for care home residents across the country.

One of James’ favourite blends is the red berry tea, which can be enjoyed hot or chilled. Its refreshing flavor not only delights but also supports hydration.

In keeping with Care UK’s commitment to sustainability, Tea From The Manor ensures its tea bags, including the strings, are fully degradable and compostable, enabling Care UK homes to recycle them with food or garden waste.
