Holly Smedley

Home Manager

Holly Smedley

Before joining Care UK, I was working as a National Head of Quality Excellence.

After many years of traveling around the country, I wanted to be closer to home to spend more time with my family.

One of my colleagues had worked in a regional senior management role in Care UK and spoke highly of their values. When I was informed that Riverside needed a Home Manager, I knew this was my chance to join a reputable organisation, with the added luxury of being able to manage a service in my own local community.

As Home Manager, it’s important to have empathy, drive, care, patience and passion. My role is to look after the safety, security and wellbeing of residents and team members, and I see the opportunity to care for others as not only a pleasure, but a privilege. Every day we get to make a difference.

I love a family atmosphere where colleagues, residents and visitors feel at home, and when residents say they are happy, content and feel loved, I feel proud of what I do. Knowing that families trust that the care their loved one receives is of a high standard also fills me with pride.

A big career highlight for me was winning care team of the year at the British Care Awards. As a home manager there is no better achievement than seeing your team grow, develop and provide the highest standard of care, and to be recognised for it. Under my management, we also won a Pinders Design Award for the best new home of the year.

I adore animals, so when I’m finished working, going home to my dog Stanley is my favourite part of my day. Spending time with my family and friends is also important to me. Nature and traveling are how I de-stress – I feel at peace when I’m surfing, paddleboarding or in the sea.

Angela Lewis
Clinical Deputy Manager

I’m a registered mental health nurse with my Level 5 qualifications in management, a diploma in nursing and a master’s degree in community care.

I joined Care UK because of its strong reputation for providing person-centred care and because it values team members.

As Deputy Manager, I provide leadership, management and day-to-day operational support for care colleagues to ensure that Riverside remains a safe and compliant environment. I enjoy leading and empowering colleagues to develop person-centred care planning, which improves the quality of care that the residents receive.

In this role it’s important to encourage team members to learn and develop their skills. You need to have sound clinical knowledge about physical and psychological needs and be approachable, value others and work well as part of the Riverside team.

When I’m not working, I enjoy gardening and spending time with my grandson who lives in South Wales.

Tinumole Thomas
Deputy Manager

I qualified as a nurse and came to live in the UK in 2010.

I always wanted to make a positive difference in people’s lives. At Care UK, there are always opportunities for career development and growth. I’ve worked here for nine years and have been promoted from Unit Manager to Clinical Lead and now Deputy Manager. As a part of this, I’ve completed a number of trainings and qualifications.

My job is to lead, direct, supervise and support the team to provide a good standard of care, and thereby improve the experience for residents living in Riverside.

Having a passion for care is the top-most quality to work in a care home setting. You should have a good understanding of people you look after and have a vision to improve their quality of life. As a leader, you need to lead by example and demonstrate to your team how to make people feel valued and respected.

My favourite part of the day is my daily walk round, which helps me plan and organise my day and stay up-to-date with any ongoing events and concerns in the home.

I love cooking when I’m not working. I enjoy preparing traditional south Indian dishes with authentic tastes and serving them to my friends and family.

Adam Perkins
Business Administrator

I’ve worked in care environments for the past three years, starting in an activities team before moving on to the administrative side just over two years ago. I decided to join Riverside care home to gain experience and make a difference in people’s lives.

In this role, you need to have charisma. I also strive to work to the highest quality in everything I do.

Meeting with residents and their family members is without a doubt my favourite part of my working day. I also love working together with my colleagues as part of a team. Working with such an amazing team makes me proud of what I do at Riverside.

When I’m not working, I enjoy socialising with friends, driving and listening to music of all varieties.
