The Big Care UK Sports Day

Move over Paris – we’re bringing a summer of sport to care homes across the UK!

As athletes around the world warm up for the Paris Olympics this summer, so too are Care UK residents across the nation.

Residents are inviting their local communities to hop, skip and jump their way into sporting tournaments happening between the 20^th-28^th July – where there’ll be games, entertainment and fun for all the family.

Keen to open our doors and show what life is really like in a Care UK care home, this summer we’re launching a new initiative, The Big Care UK Sports Day. This July, over 130 Care UK care homes will open their doors to host sports days for the local community.

Life in a Care UK home really is different. We’re always looking for new and exciting ways to encourage residents to lead fulfilling lives, which is why this year, we decided to do things a little differently and join in with this year’s international summer of sport.

We know that many residents will have loved participating in sports in their younger days – and that for many, exercise is still a big part of daily life.

From egg and spoon races to table tennis tournaments, residents and members of the local community will have a chance to win their own sporting medals, enjoy live entertainment, and barbecues throughout the week, as they learn more about life in a Care UK care home.

At Lauder Lodge in Edinburgh, residents will be challenging the community to a badminton knock-out tournament, before enjoying a menu inspired by French cuisine, complete with canapes, cheese and wine.

In the Midlands, residents at Lonsdale Mews in Loughborough will be welcoming students from local dance school, AMC School of Dance, for their very own Olympic-style opening ceremony. Guests can enjoy live music and a dance parade, before challenging residents and team members to a tug of war.

Heading south, The Potteries in Poole will be welcoming the local Mayor who will be officially opening the home’s sporting games with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. While the Mayor and locals may want to think about warming up now, former athlete and resident Ralph Thomas is already raring to go and once held the title of Dorset’s highest jumper.

Staying in the south, at Montfort Manor in Kent the home has been looking beyond Paris for inspiration and will be hosting a sumo wrestling class by a local professional for those who dare to compete. Guests will also be treated to French cheeses from a local deli and live entertainment.

Finally, at Mills Meadow in Framlingham, 11 homes from across Suffolk will be coming together to compete in a tournament to crown Suffolk’s sportiest residents. Residents and team members will be taking part in a host of activities, including bean bag races and tugs of war competitions, with each home arriving in their own Olympic-themed outfits.
